About the speaker

As a fifth-generation Wyomingite, Karen has called Wyoming home her whole life. Upon completing her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, she started off her career as an archaeologist. It was while working for the Bureau of Land Management Pinedale Field Office that she was exposed to GIS and data collection using Trimble GPS units. At that point, she was hooked and decided to take the leap to become a full-time GIS Specialist for the office through numerous oil and gas development booms and planning efforts. Karen stepped away for a few years to raise her kids. She re-entered the workforce in Cheyenne and got on with the State’s newly consolidated IT agency. It was then that she learned about software development and computer technology and shortly thereafter was appointed as the GIS Enterprise Architect. That marked her introduction to the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC), a group that continues to inspire her today. She worked for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for 5 years before going back as the State’s Chief Geo Data Officer. In 2022 she left the State to work for Dewberry as a Project Manager. In May of 2023, Karen went back to her roots with the BLM and assumed the role of the Geospatial Program Manager in the Wyoming State Office. She served as the president of NSGIC as well as of the Wyoming Geospatial Organization (WyGEO). Karen has two incredible children and enjoys gardening, skiing, backpacking, and the martial arts.
